Class of 2017 T-Shirt

A spirited tee.

In the fall of 2015, the student government for the University of Notre Dame, Class of 2017 announced a design contest for a class t-shirt that would be sold across campus. Confident in my design skills, I decided to enter a submission.

Artwork creation.

Inspired by graphic designs of city skylines, I wanted my t-shirt to feature recognizable architecture from across campus. I used photographs to aid in the creation of simplified silhouettes of buildings and monuments at the University of Notre Dame.

Contest submissions.

After creating six silhouettes, I arranged the images in a layered formation. I used transparency and a variety of colors to enhance visual interest, especially in the areas where the silhouettes overlapped. I entered this rainbow rendition to the contest and was thrilled to later learn that my submission won. My class government requested a version of the design in Notre Dame colors – blue, gold and green – that was considered as well.

Final solution.

The final design was my original rainbow-colored Notre Dame skyline. However, the student government elected a black long-sleeved t-shirt instead of a white one, so I flipped the color of the text. The shirts were produced and sold throughout the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 academic school years.
